Foundations
A crucial part of achieving longevity and getting the most out of our new pod is establishing a solid foundation. An inadequate foundation can lead to structural issues, potentially causing cracks in the pod. Uneven placement of the pod may alter its geometric shape, resulting in twisting of doors and windows, as well as the formation of gaps. In this section, we'll delve into the essential considerations for the base and access to the sides of your pod, guiding you through the process of creating the perfect foundation for your outdoor space.
Access for Installation & Maintenance
For seamless installation and maintenance of our pods, access to all four sides is essential. We recommend allowing approximately 300mm (about 12 inches) of clearance around each side of the pod. However, allowing more space should never be overlooked.
In instances where the pod is positioned in a tight corner or a confined space, it's important to consider the potential challenges this may pose for pod maintenance. Restricted access can hinder routine visual inspections, which are typically recommended every six months. This regular check-up is crucial to identify and address any issues promptly, preventing them from escalating into more significant problems. Therefore, when placing the pod in a snug location, please be mindful of the potential maintenance difficulties it may entail.
Base
The pod's foundation is the bedrock upon which your outdoor relaxation retreat will stand. To maintain the pod's structural integrity and prevent warping over time, it's imperative that all of our pods are fitted on a level and sturdy surface. We do not recommend installing any of our pods on uneven ground, grass, or generally unsuitable surfaces. Instead, we advocate for the ideal base, which includes options such as concrete, tarmac, patio stones, or even a structurally sound patio decking.
To ensure proper weight distribution and stability, it is crucial that the full, complete base is in contact with the ground.
It's crucial to avoid any substantial depressions or gullies on the base surface. A depression of more than 3/4 of an inch (20mm) at any point across the base can lead to undesirable consequences, such as the pod's floor being pushed down or bowed up in the middle. This not only poses structural issues but may also hinder you or your clients enjoyment of the pod.
An inadequate base for any pods can result in gaps forming. Gaps may develop in the pod's doors or walls. These gaps can have several consequences, including:
-
Reduced Insulation: Gaps in the structure compromise the insulation of the pod, making it less energy-efficient and potentially leading to temperature fluctuations inside.
-
Pest Intrusion: Openings can allow pests to enter the pod, which could create hygiene and maintenance issues.
-
Water Ingress: Gaps may permit water to seep into the pod, potentially causing damage to the interior and its contents.
-
Aesthetic Deterioration: Uneven gaps can mar the pod's appearance and affect its overall aesthetics.
It's essential to ensure that the pod is placed on a level and appropriate foundation to prevent these issues.
Note:
If our recommendations for building / choosing a suitable base are not adhered to, the warranty of the pod will be nulled!
How to Verify Your Pod Base
Checking the solidity and levelness of your pod base is crucial to ensure a flawless installation and prolonged usage. You can follow these simple steps to confirm its suitability:
- Use a level, a straight piece of material, alongside a spirit level to check for any rocking or depressions exceeding 3/4 of an inch (20mm).
- For added peace of mind, consider consulting a local builder or landscaper to confirm that the surface is level, ensuring a solid foundation for your outdoor pod.

Electrical
Electrical Guide for Your Pod
Before placing an order for one of our pods, it's essential to consider how you'll provide electricity inside your pod. This consideration is crucial for ensuring your pod's functionality.
Power Supply
The electrical supply for our pods is highly dependent on the intended usage of the pod. Specific electrical requirements may vary from project to project. For example, if your pod is designated as an outdoor office with a limited number of double sockets and a few lights, a 20 Amp supply may suffice. On the other hand, if your pod is equipped with multiple sockets, interior and exterior lighting, a fridge, and cooking appliances, the electrical demand will be significantly higher. In such cases, a 63 Amp supply might be necessary. Please note that these are general guidelines, and once we have a clear understanding of your pod's purpose, we can provide precise information regarding the electrical requirements.
Our in-house electrician will perform detailed calculations, taking into account load, resistance, cable size, trip times, and other essential factors. We will provide you with precise and tailored electrical information specific to your pod's intended usage.
Connection Type
There are two main types of electrical connections for our pods. The first type, pictured on the left, features an external fuseboard (IP55) fixed to the bottom of the cabin. The second type, shown on the right, includes a commando socket with a main RCD. This configuration allows for an internal fuseboard. Both setups are designed to suit the specific pod and its unique requirements. Just like the electrical supply, we will provide concise information on the most suitable connection type once we understand the nature of your project.
Qualified Electrical Installation
It is imperative to entrust this task to a qualified electrician who is well-versed in adhering to BS 7671 regulations. This guide outlines the essential knowledge to make your experience both enjoyable and safe.
- Qualified Electrician: All electrical connections for your new pod must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The installation must conform to BS 7671 regulations to ensure your safety.
- Electrical Certification: Obtain a comprehensive electrical certification from your qualified electrician to ensure that your pod's electrical system complies with safety and regulatory standards. This certification provides peace of mind regarding the safety and functionality of your electrical setup.
- Cable Routing: Ensure that all electrical cables are routed and secured properly to prevent any damage during installation or use.
- Emergency Shutdown: Consider adding an emergency shutdown switch for added safety in case of any electrical issues - recommended for commercial properties.
- Earth Bonding: Make sure that your pod is properly earthed to protect against electrical faults. Your electrician will provide expert assistance with this.
- Electrical Current Assessment:If you are setting up your pod in a commercial property, consult with your electrician to assess whether the property's existing electrical infrastructure can safely accommodate the required electrical current. This evaluation ensures that your pod's electrical demands are in line with the property's capacity, preventing overloads or disruptions to your electrical supply.
By following these guidelines, you can confidently proceed with the electrical setup of your pod. Should you have any specific questions or require further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Plumbing
Plumbing Requirements
While plumbing is not a fundamental necessity for our pods, we understand that certain projects may require water connections. Whether your pod is delivered fully assembled or in modular components, we've simplified the plumbing process to make it convenient for you.
Here's how it works: Upon discussing your specific project requirements and layout preferences, we collaborate closely with you to create scaled 2D drawings of the pod's interior. These drawings are crucial in determining the precise locations for plumbing access points.
Once these drawings are finalised and approved by you, we ensure that all necessary plumbing cutouts and access points are readily incorporated into the pod's design. This meticulous planning means that when your plumber arrives, the pod is already prepared for the water connections.
Plumbing Placement and Preparation
Our plumbing process is accurately planned, ensuring that the necessary cutouts for toilets, sinks, and/or showers are precisely located within the pod's interior. These cutouts are strategically positioned based on the 2D drawings we create in collaboration with you. This pre-planning guarantees that the pod is fully prepared for your plumber's subsequent work.
The water mains can typically be brought into the pod from underneath, as they are often embedded in the ground. However, it's essential to note that alternative plumbing arrangements, such as above-ground connections, are also feasible. The specific method chosen depends on the nature of your project and your property's infrastructure.
Prior to confirming your order, we engage in comprehensive discussions to determine the most suitable plumbing approach. We calculate and plan for all plumbing components, taking into account your specific requirements and the logistical considerations of your site. This proactive approach allows us to provide you with a tailored plumbing solution, ensuring that your pod is accessible for the plumber to complete the remaining works effortlessly.
